Case Initiation 101 Classroom
Course Description
Who Should Attend:Child support enforcement (CSE) intake workers who interview clients and process IV-A referrals from the Client Information System (CIS).
Overview and Focus:The focus of the course is on the skills required for accurate case initiation. The curriculum includes interviewing clients, assessing information to determine proper case construct, and understanding the IV-A/IV-D interface.
Topics Addressed:The primary topics addressed in the course will enable a CSE worker to:
- Apply essential interview techniques
- Evaluate domestic violence situations and process Good Cause alerts
- Assess intrastate and interstate issues at the intake level
- Evaluate paternity issues to ensure proper case construct
- Perform member clearance accurately, thus avoiding duplication of members
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of how to resolve unusual case processing, such as the minor member case
- Distinguish between the intricate details of the IV-A/IV-D referral process
- Identify incentive issues that are directly related to the intake process

Course Level
100 Level These courses provide in-depth instruction on each of the case management processes (i.e. Case Initiation, Locate, Paternity Establishment, Financials, Enforcement, Case Closure, etc) used in the Title IV-D Child Support Enforcement (CSE) Program. The courses vary in length from one to three days and are designed for less experienced CSE staff who require additional knowledge and understanding of individual CSE topics. The training is also appropriate for cross-training personnel in more than one CSE area of expertise.
